Today is an easy day as we made our way down the east Coast. After leaving Williamsburg this morning, we decided to spend the day (and night) in Charleston SC. Ashley had never seen the city and I had only been up to this location once before. We decided to walk around the city and explore the various archetypes of buildings. We started with breakfast on the road.
It was safe to say at this point of the trip as we started to get closer to home, Our ambition was heading southward, and we were about ready to be home. I wouldn’t say it was driven as much by lack of excitement, as it was that we had seen most of this landscape, and being close to home, knowing we could get to these points at anytime made us think that we could be wasting our time. Either way, we were still having a great time.
When we arrived in the city, we paid for parking for about 5 hours, since it was about noon when we arrived. Our goal for today was purely to relax and not stress, and get things accomplished by walking the city, cathedrals, and bars.
Ironically we started the walking tour of with some Ice cream and beer at a small shop near a local bar. We discovered this place called he Gryffon tavern, and I am so glad we did. The old styled colonial building and bar was a great fit to start our day of exploration. This was located downtown near a hotel which my friend owns called the Vendu. The bar itself was one of the oldest bars in America, and you could tell by the structure, and the incredible amount of dollar bills people left stapled to the roof of the building that it had been here for a while. We split a beer and continued our walking tour.
Fortunately for our walking tour the next stop was very close to this place, and it was called The Historical Charleston City Market, which was a market place where people used to have local events and retails during colonial times. This area still had vendors within the walls and we decided to buy a small batch of local spices which someone was showing us. This was a great way for us to buy a memory that we could bring back from this trip. These were sold in plastic bags so the containment wasn’t sold properly but it was still nice to have.
We were getting hungry for lunch, and with my friends advice we went to the 82 Queen restaurant for lunch. This is where I had what I would consider my favorite Shrimp and grits we have ever come across. Though this lunch was expensive at a nice place we enjoyed ourselves.
From this point we starred our walk back towards the water stopping at a cathedral, and another bar (on the strip green bar), and with this we reached the cities park. This park was wonderfully built along the coast and steeped in historical artifacts. This was possibly the best part of the city from a historical site, as it had cannons, historical markers, and artifacts dating to before George Washington was president. This was a great cap to the end of the day.
It was time to call it a day and head back towards the hotel, which was a motel 6 gain being the cheapest place in the relative area. Once we checked in we decided since we were ahead of budget and knew we weren’t going to be going crazy, we went to a world famous steakhouse called Halls chophouse. This place was out of this world fantastic. In my humble opinion I believe it could be one of the best places I have ever been to for steak, and as a steak connoisseur I think that is saying something. Though we were ahead of budget we knew we could spend more coming home, and knowing we were to coordinate the return to our jobs the next couple days. It was time to go rest for another lengthy drive tomorrow to st Augustine.
