This morning we woke up to a wonderful breakfast display, and coffee, hosted by my friend Jenna. She was such a great host, and gave us a great opportunity to enjoy Sea island and perform the night before. This was wonderful to do and be a part of. After morning coffee, and small talk, we had the tips on what to see in Saint Augustine, as that was our goal to see that day.
We left about 9am, and ended up getting there by 11am. Saint Augustine is Floridas oldest city, and the oldest in the United states, dating back almost to the 1500s! This was an amazing experience. The whole city has a flair of Charleston, and Key West blended. There are many old buildings and restaurants to explore.
We had to pay for parking as the tourists were already starting to pack the city. Our hotel that evening was booked near the interstate about 10 miles from the downtown area of the city, as we didn’t want to pay a ton to explore and stay within the touristy area of the town. With that accomplished, Our first goal of the day was actually to eat. We had been suggested to try Harrys seafood and we did just that. This restaurant had a New Orleans seafood flair, but I did not realize this was a chain until I looked them up upon sitting at their bar. Of course I had to start the afternoon with a beer and then eat lunch…naturally.
The city in general is historic, and the primary feature would have to be the old fort. Unfortunately for us we didn’t want to take the tour, but people are allowed to walk the perimeter, and explore that outside area of the fort. This is well worth the effort. We spent about half an hour there, then decided to walk southward to the next destination to see. This is called Flagler college.
The college itself was founded in 1565. The building has great architecture, and is one of the historic landmarks of Florida. You are allowed to explore the campus, but you cannot enter rooms unless you are a student, so the exploration factor is limited. We spent about 15 minutes here, and then decided we needed to cool off for a bit and get some ice cream. Overall today, we were not very energized, so with almost 2 hours of sunlight left, we headed to our hotel to relax for the next day. I believe it was at this point of the trip, we were ready to get home, as the excitement had worn off, as we were in our home state. This makes sense, since I had lived here my whole life. However, Saint Augustine was great to explore and would love to go back there one day.
