We woke up today in Miami, at a retro hotel which gave us the perfect position to head south to Key west. One of the bucket list places of this trip was to drive the 7 miles bridge road over the southern part of Florida. This of course is one of the most dramatic drives in the world, as its almost 50 miles of over water, and as a Florida resident who has not driven it, it was only fitting to cross it off my bucket list.
We started around 8am, grabbed our coffee and donut, and headed down to Marathon Florida where the bridge starts. When we got to Islamorada, we decided to stop for lunch at a local waterside restaurant. This was a great area with a scenic overlook on the water, and along the dock we could see hundreds of colorful fish, and water life. This is a huge difference from the rest of the trip e had experienced, as we were heavily invested in spending time in mountains and desert this trip. After our fish lunch we headed down to Key West.
We were only going to visit Key West, and bar hop in the day time. We ended up parking off Duval street and started our tour of Key west. The primary thing for us to accomplish was just to reach the southern most point of the USA, which is a landmark in Key west, and was only a quarter mile from where we parked. This was to cross our fourth corner of this trip off our list, and from this point we would only be heading north to our house in Tampa from here.
While we were in keywest, we of course had to explore to culture, and I didn’t realize that roosters can run free around this city, this was surprising with how many hurricanes we get every year here. We started at a bar called Captain Tonys where many people were smoking outside and we were able to get a beer, and meet locals. The people we met tend to be fascinated with our journey, so every area we went to, we made new friends.
We continued our tour down Duval street to two more bars, and walked the full length of the island. When we left the island, we decided to find a camping ground, but when we decided on a location google gave us a camp site on a military base. We were turned around not knowing we would have to go onto the base to camp, and was reserved for military personnel. This was no big issue, as the sun was still up, and we were able to find a nice cheap hotel in Holiday Florida, thus not the way we were able to go to a nice steakhouse where we had a great dinner of filet and sides. Once again we were able to meet locals, and they took a liking to us and our adventure we were getting so close to finishing. We ended p leaving at dark, and then made it to the hotel in Homestead Florida. This was a great day, and we were able to be in hotel without much stress. This trip was getting closer to the end, but we were very satisfied with our endeavors.
