The beginning of today was great as we had hot coffee and tea in the room. With having our morning coffee taken care of we saved sometime getting ready and were able to be at the bus stop by 8am in order to get to Dubrovnik. We were about 2 miles from the city center. This area had a great form of bus transport, and was very efficient. Without this we would have spent a long time walking the 3 miles to the city!
Once we arrived we decided to have a more hearty breakfast,as the city was pretty small and we explore a large chunk of it the day before in the evening. We ate at the first restaurant right outside the city wall entrance, and after a European styled breakfast of charcuterie and cheeses, we were ready to head into the town. We wanted to walk the out skirts of the city so we walked down to the port/ beach area, and discovered there were relatively cheap kayak tours available for the day. We went ahead and booked a tour for about two hours later (1pm).
In the mean time, Before the time to kayak, we continued to walk around the city walls. On the north side of the city there is another castle overlook area that can give you one of the best views and close ups of the walled city. This was called Lovrijenac and can be seen in the picture below. One of the cool things about this was the overlook to the water and we could see the kayaks and boats where we would be using floating in the bay.
I was hoping, based on our plans, we could make it to Lokrum that day, but it was too far to make it in one day as it was an island which required transfer. We still enjoyed our kayaking time. The reason this was amazing was a circular tour of the island of Lokrum. Evidently this island is a local legend of being cursed, thus no one is allowed on the island. In fact, when Napoleon stayed on the island during his Russian conquests, it was the first time he lost a battle, and that incident marked the beginning of his downfall. Since then, it has been considered cursed for many years. This was great to hear from the tour guides and learn about the history of local culture. We were in a group of about 10 people mostly our age. The next part of the tour was around the city walls of the port, and then down the coast, where we could cliff dive for about half an hour. We decided that the water was a bit too cold to go into the deep parts diving, so we hung out on the beach staying relatively warm without going over our heads swimming. This was still a great experience as the blue waters were known to be brilliant, and they absolutely were, so just being able to soak that up was worth it! The tours cost 55EU.
It was time to head back and the tour of kayaks were over, but we were given a few suggestions on what to do. As the day was getting old, we headed to the world famous Bula bar on the cliff of Dubrovnik, where we were told it was one of the best, and highest rated bars in all of Europe, due to its dramatic coastline views and the ability to relax along the old city walls of Dubrovnik. This was pricey, but absolutely worth it. We stayed there until the sun started to go down, and where we were located in the the west side of town, we decided to get dinner near there at a wonderful restaurant in front of the cathedral pictured below.
This evening was perhaps on of the best dinners of the trip, as we had lobster and seafood pasta near the cathedral square of the city, and this truly was an incredible experience and day. Though expensive. After dinner we decided to stop by a few more bars before heading back to the hotel for the night. This was our second night there, and we still had one more, so the next day we were to take the bus to Montenegro! One fun fact is the staircases pictures below are the stairs that Game of Thrones filmed Cersei being ‘Shamed’ while they walked her through the town in the episode.
