Today started early knowing we had a long drive ahead of us (this is becoming redundant to say haha) , and we headed north out of the Kaibab Forest and then went west along Highway 89A.
Our first agenda of the day was to get groceries in the city of Kanab, on our way to Bryce Canyon National Park. We had a hotel booked in this city as well so we decided to check in as well but we were not allowed to put up our stuff until three, which would’ve helped but it ended up being OK.
Once we were done in the town getting our meats and vegetables for dinner to cook, we headed north on State Road 12 to Bryce Canyon National Park. This is where we intersect with the previous post about being on this road 7 days earlier. As you could imagine we were hungry so we stopped for lunch in the small town of Bryce. This is a very tourist oriented environment so there were many quick food stops to eat in. There’s a great little pizza and snack shop on the way into the park. We stopped here to grab some burgers and hotdogs.
From this point we decided to do the short ‘Wall Street’ hike and then extend the hike through the 4 mile ‘Peekaboo Gulch’. This was a spectacular hike which went to the Queen’s Throne and Thors Hammer….both of these were highlights of the park. Fortunately there weren’t many people and it was a very pleasant experience, however the forest had a forest fire and the clouds were very smoky while the fire was still burning only a couple miles from us.
It was a very unique sight, as the sky looked very stormy but in fact it was just smoke. Which was good news, because if it was storming our main hike this trip would’ve been closed due to flooding (The Subway).
After a long hike of pushing everyone we decide to head back to the hotel and get some rest. We bought a very cheap hotel and we had six of us in one room. It was quite an experience, as the shower would not drain very quick, and everyone had to wait 30 minutes between people to shower. Ashley and I went out for a drink while the others rested in the hotel room. We ended up in a great little cowboy saloon which featured a small old OK corral style area and wild wild West theme and attractions. This place was called The Iron Horse. It was definitely unexpected for a late night bar in Utah.
After two drinks each we headed back to the hotel where we all ended up getting to bed around nine and got ready for one of the best parts and the whole trip and one of my all-time favorites places the next day…..Zion National Park!
