August 6 – Day 37
Being a Game of thrones fan, our trip in Croatia was largely planned around seeing the famed inspiration for Kings Landing (Dubrovnik). The first thing this morning was to get the first bus to Dubrovnik, which is about a two hour bus ride from Split. This bus ride however is extremely scenic, and worth it alone just to view the landscape as such. The coast of Croatia is one of the most beautiful parts of Europe and worth seeing alone aside form the cities. We thoroughly enjoyed the ride to the port of Dubrovnik.
When we arrived in Dubrovnik, we had to get to our hotel fo the night before we explored the city. Even though we were very excited to head into the town, we knew we needed to get our backpacks situated first. The port is located on the coast, and there is a canyon of sorts which leads in from the north side of the port into the coast. Our hotel was located in this canyon and it was a bed and breakfast of sorts since someone owned this property and we needed to check in with her to be allowed to stay and have the keys. Once we checked in we took a shower and rode the bus back to the Old town entrance. This was very exciting as we now had half a day to explore the old town district of the famous city of which we had infamously learned of its history.
We entered the city from the east side where most walking tourist begin their journey into the old town district of the city. There is something about this city that has nostalgia. Not just the fact you are located in one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, but also that the history of this city is around every corner, along with the cultural sites in the area. We immediately started touring the streets by accessing the city fro the southern wall. We walked in and made a point of getting some pizza as we walked through the walled city. This was just to take the hunger edge off.
We decided to head through the primary town walk to the port area of Dubrovnik. This is where most of the local boats and fisherman gathered for their end of day catch release. We spent a bit of time there as there were many cats in the area and wanted to pet them, as they were stray and only were here to see if any tourist would feed them for a little bit. We of course did! The sun was starting to set, but we figured our day in Dubrovnik was complete and worth the effort, with that it was time to head back.
We headed back to the hotel, but we had not had dinner, so we were directed fro the owner of the hotel to head to the restaurant up the street which was at the base of the canyon alcove. This featured a lake and waterfall outside and really great local food. a bonus there was a bunch of kittens running around and jumping on us while we had dinner. This was great local suggestion from our host, and we thoroughly enjoyed the meal in one of our favorite places thus far on this trip. We decided to head back to the hotel and when we arrived we met our host and she offered for us to have a drink outside. We decided to have a few after realizing the local camaraderie with her was amazing, and our conversation was great.
