This morning we woke up from our wonderful lake campsite in Winthrop washington and headed East to the town of Omak, and our goal was to do an eastbound scenic drive into the Banff region of Canada. We stopped for our usual coffee and breakfast at burger king since we had finally reached civilization once again. We needed to get into Canada to see our first destination of the day, and it was spectacular. This site is very unknown but so amazing, and since it is on private property it was hard to view, but still worth the effort to stop. This area is called spotted Lake, and it is the most wild thing I’ve ever seen in a lake. It is a normal shaped small sized lake, but with over 100 miniature lakes in the middle of it. We were one again only able to view it from the side of the road, and there was another person there trying to see it too, but for the most part we were the only ones viewing it.
This was worth the little bit of detour, and it was located just across the USA border. We headed westward for a moment to connect to a north bound to head north through the large city of Kelowna. These cities were larger than expected but didn’t seem to be super exciting. Shortly after however, we started to see the incredible landscape start to get even more dramatic. We hit our northbound apex, then started to reach Yoho National Forrest, and Glacier (Canada’s ) national park, as we continued our drive.
This drive featured many glacier lakes carved from glacial melt of the surrounding mountains. After stopping at a grocery store to get supplies for the night ahead to camp, we saw in the distance Mt. Revelstoke. This was a massive apexed mountain with a massive glacier on top of it. This view could be one of the best we had seen on this trip, and we soaked in the view through the next hour to get to our final city.
Our final destination of the day was actually a town called Golden, just about an hour from Banff. It was getting late in the evening and we needed to find a campsite. Within the town we came across a wonderful campsite just on the outskirts of this western tourist town, and setup for the evening. We were actually the last campsite to be booked that night, so that was very good to be able to obtain it before the end of the day. We cooked our meal for the night and since we were so close to town we decided to go explore local bars. As mentioned in previous posts, we love to find local and historic pubs, as we find it the best way to mingle with locals, and get advice on the area.
This pub we went to didn’t disappoint as we met a nice lady who was originally from Arizona, and she gave us tips, great conversation, and even a free beer! After drowning our flight of beer we were ready to head back to the campsite and sleep for the night. Tomorrow was a big bucket list place for us to reach….Banff National Park!
